El-Sayed Unveils Senior Affordability Plan in Democratic Senate Race
Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed rolls out sweeping plan to eliminate Medicare cost-sharing and expand benefits for Michigan seniors in competitive Democratic primary race.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN β Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed released a policy platform Wednesday aimed at reducing costs for Michigan’s aging population as he competes in a three-way primary race.
El-Sayed, who is running against state Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham for the Democratic nomination, announced his “AAA Plan” that would eliminate cost-sharing for Medicare beneficiaries and lift the Social Security payroll tax cap.
“Michiganders deserve a future where retirement doesn’t mean anxiety and financial stress,” El-Sayed said in a statement. “But as they privatize more of Medicare, strip down Social Security for parts, and make aging less affordable every year, we need big, structural changes. It’s time for an America where our seniors can age with dignity, and the Aging Affordably in America Plan does just that.”
Medicare and Healthcare Reforms
The plan would expand Medicare drug price negotiation powers to cover all prescription drugs while closing existing Medicare coverage gaps. El-Sayed’s proposal includes expanded coverage for vision, dental, and hearing services.
The candidate also wants to ban AI-based prior authorizations, which his campaign argues create barriers to healthcare access for seniors. These reforms represent significant changes to how Medicare currently operates for beneficiaries across the state.
Social Security and Tax Changes
El-Sayed’s platform calls for repealing the windfall elimination provision and government pension offset, which currently reduce Social Security benefits for some retirees. By lifting the Social Security payroll tax cap, the plan would require higher earners to contribute more to the system.
The campaign stated that since seniors “played by the rules and paid into the social safety net,” they deserve stability and comfort as a return on their investment. This includes reliable Social Security payments they can live on and Medicare coverage for all healthcare needs.
Property Tax Relief Framework
The AAA Plan includes provisions for a federal framework supporting state-level property tax freezes, allowing seniors to remain in their homes without facing escalating property costs. El-Sayed’s team believes this component will help seniors age in the communities where they feel most comfortable.
The campaign emphasized that the plan ensures “the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share into the system” while delivering comprehensive benefits across Medicare, Social Security, and housing affordability. El-Sayed’s team argues these structural changes are necessary to address what they see as ongoing threats to programs seniors depend on.
The Democratic primary election will determine which candidate faces the Republican nominee in the general election for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat.
