Trump’s Quest for Election Control Stalls Six Months Before Midterms
Trump’s efforts to control elections through DOJ raids and GOP pressure have largely failed six months before midterms, experts say.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA β President Donald Trump’s campaign to influence U.S. elections has largely failed to achieve its goals, according to election experts, despite months of social media attacks, pressure on Republican lawmakers, and Justice Department actions against political opponents.
Six months before the November midterm elections, Trump’s administration has struggled to impose sweeping voting restrictions or exercise significant authority over electoral contests. The effort has been blocked by courts, rejected by many state election officials, and opposed by key Republican senators.
“I think there’s many out there who are worried about the constant drumbeat of what the administration is trying to do and what they might do in the future. I hear this from voters, I hear this from election officials,” said David Becker, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation & Research.
Limited Success Despite Aggressive Tactics
The president’s campaign to control elections represents a separate effort from his more successful redistricting initiatives. While Trump has used various pressure tactics, including social media rage and attempts to cajole Republican lawmakers, his record of concrete achievements remains minimal.
“And what I see is that there is a vast chasm between wanting to do something and trying to do something and actually successfully doing it,” Becker added.
The administration’s struggles come despite unleashing the Department of Justice on political enemies and maintaining constant pressure through various channels.
Concerns About Future Actions
Election experts warn that much could change before November arrives. Facing likely Republican losses in the midterms, Trump could respond with increasingly aggressive attempts to control electoral processes.
The Justice Department has already conducted raids targeting election officials, including the FBI seizure of ballots from the 2020 presidential election from Fulton County, Georgia. Officials worry about additional similar actions as the election approaches.
Democrats remain prepared for potential federal election interference, particularly the possibility of Trump deploying immigration enforcement agents or military personnel at polling locations. Such deployment would violate federal law, though some administration aides have declined to definitively rule out the action.
The ongoing tensions reflect broader concerns about election integrity and federal overreach as the country approaches a significant midterm election cycle.
