Stevens Gains Delaware Senator’s Backing in Michigan Senate Race
Delaware Senator Chris Coons endorses Birmingham congresswoman for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, citing her work on automotive rescue and electability.

BIRMINGHAM, MICHIGAN β U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens secured another high-profile endorsement in her bid for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, earning support from Delaware Senator Chris Coons as she builds momentum in the Democratic primary race.
Coons, who brings manufacturing experience to his Senate role, praised Stevens for her work alongside former President Barack Obama on the automotive rescue plan during the late-2000s financial crisis. The Delaware senator also emphasized Stevens’ electability against the presumptive Republican nominee, former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of White Lake.
“Haley Stevens is exactly the kind of leader Democrats need in the U.S. Senate right now, and she’s the best candidate to keep this seat blue and help us flip the Senate,” Coons said in a statement released by Stevens’ campaign. “Haley has spent her career standing up for working families, protecting Michigan jobs, and taking on the fights that matter most. Haley Stevens is Michigan’s best chance at winning against Mike Rogers in the fall and keeping the seat blue.”
Growing Senate Support
The endorsement from Coons marks the third U.S. senator to back Stevens’ candidacy. She previously received support from Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona, building a coalition of Democratic senators behind her campaign.
Stevens expressed gratitude for Coons’ endorsement, highlighting their potential collaboration in the upper chamber. “Senator Coons knows how to get things done. He’s an effective leader, and I look forward to working with him in the Senate to stand up to Trump’s chaos, fight to lower costs, and make sure every working family can get ahead,” Stevens said in a statement.
Democratic Primary Competition
Stevens faces competition within her own party as she seeks the Democratic nomination. Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak and former Wayne County health official Abdul El-Sayed are also pursuing the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat.
The Birmingham congresswoman has been actively courting endorsements from Democratic leaders, recently securing backing from former Michigan U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow. These endorsements signal growing institutional support for Stevens as the primary campaign intensifies.
Stevens’ campaign has emphasized her legislative experience and her role in economic recovery efforts, positioning her as the candidate best equipped to handle both the primary contest and a potential general election matchup against Rogers, who previously represented Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.
