Michigan Politicians Seek Common Ground at Mackinac Conference Despite Partisan Tensions
Politicians and business leaders gather on Mackinac Island seeking bipartisan cooperation despite lingering tensions from recent legislative battles.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MICHIGAN β State politicians and business leaders gathered at the annual Mackinac Policy Conference this week to bridge partisan divides, though underlying tensions from recent legislative battles remain evident beneath the surface of bipartisan cooperation.
The conference, taking place at the Grand Hotel, follows years of intense ideological battles between Michigan’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives and Democratic-led Senate over state spending, policy initiatives, and legislative control.
Recent Legislative Conflicts
The partisan tensions reached a peak in 2025 when the two chambers nearly pushed the state into fiscal crisis through a budgetary standoff. The House’s efforts to eliminate administrative work projects clashed with the Senate’s push to restore school meals in the base education budget, creating lasting animosity between the legislative bodies.
Despite these ongoing tensions, conference organizers are working to establish common ground between Michigan’s business community and public servants across local, county, state, and federal government levels.
Whitmer Signs Military Funding Bill
On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation providing $152 million in funding to upgrade runways and infrastructure at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. The state investment is designed to unlock $792 million in federal investments for the base, which will support a new F-15EX fighter wing.
The bill signing ceremony took place during the conference, representing one area where lawmakers have found bipartisan agreement on military and economic development initiatives.
Focus on Communication and Collaboration
Conference presenters emphasized the importance of improved communication methods and deeper listening between political parties and government levels. The event featured presentations aimed at developing new approaches to cross-party dialogue and cooperation.
The Mackinac Policy Conference traditionally brings together Michigan’s political and business leadership for discussions on state priorities and policy directions. This year’s focus on bridging partisan divides reflects the ongoing challenges facing the state legislature as it attempts to navigate divided government.
While conference participants engage in formal presentations and networking sessions, the underlying partisan tensions from recent legislative battles continue to influence relationships between Republican and Democratic lawmakers, according to observations from the event.
