CLEVELAND, OHIO β€” The National Weather Service issued beach hazards statements Wednesday afternoon warning of high risk rip currents along northern Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline through this weekend.

The weather service’s Cleveland office issued two separate alerts at 3:39 p.m. covering different portions of the lakeshore. The first warning affects Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula Lakeshore Counties in Ohio, along with Northern Erie County in Pennsylvania, and remains in effect through Friday evening at 10 p.m.

A second alert covers Lucas, Ottawa, Erie and Lorain Counties and extends through Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Dangerous Swimming Conditions Expected

Wind and wave action will create hazardous currents along the lakeshore during the warning period. Officials strongly advise swimmers to avoid entering the water due to the elevated risk.

“Currents can carry swimmers away from shore through a sand bar and along structures extending out into the lake,” according to the National Weather Service warning.

Multi-County Impact Along Lake Erie

The hazardous conditions will affect a significant stretch of Ohio’s Lake Erie coastline. The northern counties of Lucas, Ottawa, Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula will all experience dangerous rip current conditions.

These counties encompass major lakefront communities including Cleveland, Toledo, Lorain and Ashtabula, along with numerous smaller beach towns and recreational areas popular with residents and visitors.

Rip currents pose a serious threat to swimmers and beachgoers, as they can quickly pull people away from shore into deeper water. The powerful currents are particularly dangerous near piers, breakwalls and other structures that extend into the lake.

Safety Recommendations

Beach visitors should exercise extreme caution during the warning period and avoid swimming entirely. Those who choose to visit lakefront areas should stay well away from the water’s edge, particularly near structures where currents can be strongest.

The National Weather Service regularly monitors Lake Erie conditions and issues beach hazards statements when wind and wave patterns create dangerous swimming conditions. The current warnings reflect meteorological conditions expected to persist through the weekend across multiple counties along Ohio’s northern border.
