JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA β€” Dense fog and smoke reduced visibility to a quarter mile or less across portions of inland North Florida and Southeast Georgia early Tuesday morning, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service for motorists to exercise extreme caution.

The weather service issued a special weather statement at 6:29 a.m. EDT, advising that hazardous conditions would persist through mid-morning before improving around 9 a.m. as visibility increases and smoke begins to disperse.

“Motorists early this morning should remain alert for sudden changes in visibility, especially in low spots and near marshes, rivers, creeks or lakes,” the National Weather Service warned. Officials advised drivers to slow down and maintain extra distance between vehicles in case sudden stops become necessary.

Severe Weather Activity in Alabama

Severe thunderstorms moved through southwestern Alabama early Tuesday morning, with the National Weather Service Mobile tracking a strong storm system at 5:21 a.m. CDT located four miles southwest of Movico, approximately nine miles north of Creola.

The storm, moving east at 50 mph, brought wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch hail. Doppler radar indicated the system posed risks to outdoor objects and tree limbs, with potential for minor damage from gusty winds and hail.

Affected Communities

The Alabama storm system impacted several communities, including Bay Minette, Stockton, Axis, Mount Vernon, the I-65 and Alabama Highway 225 interchange area, Movico, and the Poarch Creek Reservation.

Weather officials warned that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects, while minor damage to outdoor property remained possible from the hail and wind combination.

The fog and smoke conditions across the Florida-Georgia border region particularly affected low-lying areas and locations near water sources, where atmospheric conditions can trap moisture and reduce visibility more dramatically than surrounding areas.
