Water main break closes streets in southeast Atlanta dining district
Major water main rupture along Memorial Drive near Grant Park forces street closures and disrupts popular southeast Atlanta dining district during busy lunch hours.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — A major water main break forced the closure of multiple streets in southeast Atlanta’s popular dining district early Tuesday morning, disrupting traffic and affecting local businesses during the busy lunch hour.
The rupture occurred along Memorial Drive near Grant Park, sending water gushing across the roadway and into nearby storm drains. City crews responded to the scene around 7:30 a.m. after reports of flooding in the area.
“We have teams working to isolate the break and begin repairs,” said Atlanta Department of Watershed Management spokesperson Maria Rodriguez. “We’re asking drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.”
Street Closures and Traffic Impact
Memorial Drive remains closed between Boulevard and Hill Street, forcing commuters to detour through residential neighborhoods. The closure affects access to several popular restaurants and cafes that typically see heavy foot traffic during lunch hours.
Georgia Department of Transportation officials reported significant delays on nearby Interstate 20 as drivers sought alternative routes. Local business owners expressed concern about the timing of the break during peak dining hours.
“This is happening right when we’re getting ready for the lunch rush,” said Tom Mitchell, owner of Corner Bistro on Memorial Drive. “We’ve already had customers calling to ask if we’re open.”
Repair Timeline and Water Service
City engineers estimate repairs could take 8 to 12 hours to complete, depending on the extent of damage to the 24-inch water main. The break has not affected water service to nearby residents or businesses, according to watershed management officials.
Emergency crews have established a perimeter around the work zone and are pumping standing water from the roadway. The break appears to have occurred at a joint in the aging infrastructure, which was installed in the 1960s.
“We’re prioritizing getting the street reopened while ensuring the repair is done properly,” Rodriguez added. “Public safety is our primary concern.”
Business and Community Response
Several restaurants in the dining district have adjusted their hours or implemented delivery-only service until street access is restored. The Grant Park Farmers Market, scheduled for this evening, has been relocated to nearby Oakland Cemetery’s entrance.
City officials expect Memorial Drive to reopen by late Tuesday evening, though some lane restrictions may remain in place through Wednesday morning. Drivers are advised to monitor local traffic reports and plan extra time for commutes through the area.
The water main break is the third major infrastructure failure in Atlanta this month, highlighting ongoing challenges with the city’s aging water system. The Department of Watershed Management continues to work on a multi-year replacement program for deteriorating pipes throughout the metropolitan area.
