RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — A Wake County couple faces child abuse charges after authorities rescued six children from deplorable living conditions, including a 13-year-old who was allegedly kept in a dog kennel, according to court documents.

Wake County Sheriff’s deputies arrested James Michael Thompson, 34, and Amanda Nicole Thompson, 31, following an investigation that began when authorities received reports of child neglect at their home. The couple has been charged with multiple counts of felony child abuse and neglect.

Court documents describe the residence as “filthy” with conditions deemed unfit for human habitation. The six children, ranging in age from 2 to 13 years old, were removed from the home by Child Protective Services and placed in protective custody.

Disturbing Living Conditions Found

According to the arrest warrants, investigators found evidence that one of the children, a 13-year-old, was confined in a dog kennel as punishment. The documents detail unsanitary living conditions throughout the home, with reports of human and animal waste, spoiled food, and general squalor.

Deputies responding to the scene documented multiple health and safety hazards that posed immediate risks to the children’s wellbeing. The investigation revealed a pattern of neglect and abuse spanning several months, officials said.

Criminal Charges Filed

Both defendants face felony charges of child abuse inflicting serious physical injury and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues, according to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

James Thompson is being held at the Wake County Detention Center under a $500,000 bond. Amanda Thompson is also in custody with bond set at $400,000. Both are scheduled to appear in Wake County Superior Court next month.

The couple’s relationship to the children has not been disclosed by authorities, who cited the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns for the minors involved.

Children Receive Medical Care

All six children were evaluated by medical professionals following their removal from the home. While specific details about their conditions have not been released, sources familiar with the case indicate some of the children required immediate medical attention.

Wake County Department of Social Services is working with local agencies to ensure the children receive appropriate care and placement. The department declined to comment on specific details of the case, citing confidentiality requirements in child welfare matters.

Neighbors in the area reported they had noticed concerning activities at the residence but were unaware of the severity of the situation inside the home. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about child welfare and the role of community reporting when suspected abuse or neglect is observed, according to child advocacy groups.
