COLUMBUS — Authorities have released the identities of two people who died in a fire at a north Columbus apartment complex earlier this week.

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 45-year-old Michael Thompson and 38-year-old Sarah Martinez, both residents of the Northgate Village Apartments on Cleveland Avenue. Both victims died from smoke inhalation, according to preliminary autopsy results.

The fire broke out Tuesday morning at approximately 3:30 a.m. in a second-floor unit of the three-story building. Columbus Fire Division crews responded to multiple 911 calls reporting flames and heavy smoke visible from the structure.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Firefighters arrived within six minutes of the initial call and began search and rescue operations. The two victims were found unconscious in separate units and transported to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead.

“Our crews worked aggressively to search every unit and ensure all residents were accounted for,” said Columbus Fire Division Battalion Chief Robert Davis. “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to save these two individuals.”

Emergency responders evacuated 24 residents from the building, with three others treated on scene for minor smoke inhalation. The American Red Cross provided temporary housing assistance to displaced families.

Investigation Ongoing

The Columbus Division of Fire and the State Fire Marshal’s office continue investigating the cause of the blaze. Officials have not yet determined whether the fire was accidental or suspicious.

Fire investigators spent Wednesday examining the scene and collecting evidence. The damaged building remains cordoned off while the investigation proceeds.

“We’re working methodically through the scene to determine the origin and cause of this fire,” said State Fire Marshal Inspector Jennifer Walsh. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims during this difficult time.”

Community Impact

The Northgate Village Apartments house approximately 150 residents in 60 units. Property management company Riverside Properties said they are working with displaced tenants to find alternative housing while repairs are completed.

The building’s fire suppression system activated during the incident, though officials said the extent of smoke and flame spread suggests the fire progressed rapidly through the second floor.

Counseling services are being provided to residents and first responders who witnessed the incident. The Columbus City Council is expected to review the case during next week’s public safety committee meeting.

This marks the third fatal residential fire in Columbus this year. Fire officials remind residents to check smoke detector batteries monthly and develop evacuation plans with family members.
