ATLANTA — Two pedestrians died Wednesday morning in separate incidents on metro Atlanta highways, according to Georgia State Patrol officials.

The first fatality occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Interstate 285 eastbound near Campbellton Road in Fulton County. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle, prompting authorities to shut down multiple lanes during the morning rush hour, Georgia State Patrol reported.

The second deadly incident happened approximately two hours later on Interstate 20 eastbound near Candler Road in DeKalb County. Another pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle around 7:45 a.m., officials said.

Traffic Disruptions During Rush Hour

Both incidents caused significant traffic delays during the morning commute. The I-285 incident forced the closure of the right three lanes for several hours while investigators worked the scene, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The I-20 incident similarly impacted traffic flow, with the right two lanes blocked as emergency responders cleared the scene. Both highways were fully reopened by mid-morning, officials confirmed.

Ongoing Investigations

Georgia State Patrol investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to both pedestrians being on the highways. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families.

Officials have not indicated whether charges will be filed against either driver involved in the incidents. Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to preliminary reports.

The incidents raise ongoing safety concerns about pedestrians on metro Atlanta’s busy highway system. State patrol officials regularly remind the public that pedestrians are prohibited on interstate highways except in emergency situations.
