COLUMBUS, OHIO — Starbucks announced new employee benefits this week that will provide baristas across Ohio with bonuses of up to $1,200 and expanded opportunities for customers to add tips through the company’s mobile app.

The coffee chain revealed the compensation changes as part of efforts to improve working conditions for its hourly employees. Baristas will receive performance-based bonuses ranging from several hundred to $1,200, depending on their tenure and store performance metrics.

Enhanced Digital Tipping Options

Starting immediately, customers using the Starbucks mobile app can now add tips for baristas when placing orders for pickup or delivery. The digital tipping feature allows customers to select preset tip amounts or customize their own gratuity.

Previously, mobile app users could only tip baristas in person with cash or when paying with a card at the register. The expanded tipping system aims to increase earnings for workers who handle a growing volume of mobile orders.

Bonus Structure and Eligibility

The bonus payments will be distributed to eligible baristas based on several factors, including length of employment and individual store performance. Workers who have been with the company longer and those at higher-performing locations may receive larger bonus amounts.

Starbucks operates dozens of locations throughout the Columbus metropolitan area and hundreds more across Ohio. The company employs thousands of baristas statewide who will be eligible for the new compensation program.

Broader Employee Initiative

The bonus and tipping expansion is part of a series of employee-focused initiatives from Starbucks. The company has faced increased scrutiny over working conditions and compensation as labor organizing efforts have emerged at various locations nationwide.

Local Starbucks workers in Columbus have reported positive reactions to the announced changes. The enhanced earning opportunities come as many service industry employees continue to seek better wages and working conditions in a competitive job market.

Company officials indicated the changes will take effect immediately for the tipping expansion, while bonus payments will be processed in the coming weeks. Starbucks has not specified whether additional compensation improvements are planned for the future.
