RALEIGH — A Raleigh police officer was fired and charged with a sex crime after allegedly engaging in inappropriate conduct with a traffic crash victim, according to department officials.

The officer was terminated immediately following an internal investigation into the allegations, police said. Department leadership described the alleged conduct as “troubling and disgraceful” in a statement released Monday.

The incident occurred after the officer responded to a vehicle crash within the city limits, according to police reports. Authorities have not released specific details about the nature of the alleged crime or when it took place.

Investigation and Charges

The Raleigh Police Department launched an internal investigation after receiving reports about the officer’s conduct. The investigation was conducted in coordination with outside law enforcement agencies, officials said.

Criminal charges have been filed against the officer, though police have not disclosed the specific charges or court date. The officer’s name has not been released pending the ongoing investigation.

“This alleged behavior is completely contrary to the values and standards we expect from our officers,” a department spokesperson said. “We take these allegations very seriously and acted swiftly once they came to our attention.”

Department Response

Police Chief Estella Patterson called the allegations unacceptable and emphasized that such conduct would not be tolerated within the department. The officer was placed on administrative leave during the investigation before being terminated.

The department is reviewing its policies and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future, according to officials. Training on professional conduct and victim interaction may be implemented as a result of this case.

The victim in the case is receiving support services, though police declined to provide additional details to protect their privacy. No other officers were implicated in the alleged misconduct, according to the investigation.

Ongoing Legal Process

The case has been forwarded to the Wake County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Court proceedings are expected to begin in the coming weeks, officials said.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted with portions of the investigation to ensure objectivity, according to police. This marks the second officer-involved misconduct case for the Raleigh Police Department this year.

Police emphasized that the alleged actions of one officer do not represent the department as a whole. The majority of officers serve with integrity and dedication to the community, officials said.

The department continues to cooperate with prosecutors as the legal process moves forward. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate, police said.
