COLUMBUS — A Columbus-area high school marching band refused to let theft derail their Disney World performance, successfully completing their scheduled show despite having their instruments stolen just days before the trip.

The Westerville North High School marching band discovered their instruments had been stolen from their school facility earlier this week, according to school officials. The theft occurred just before the band’s planned departure for a performance at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Despite the setback, band directors and students worked quickly to secure replacement instruments from local music stores and other schools in the district. The community rallied to support the students, with donations of instruments and equipment pouring in from across the Columbus area.

Community Support Enables Performance

“The response from our community has been overwhelming,” said a Westerville City Schools spokesperson. “Local music stores, other schools, and families stepped up to make sure these students could still have their Disney experience.”

The band was able to borrow and rent enough instruments to perform their scheduled show at Disney World. Students and directors spent extra rehearsal time adjusting to the unfamiliar equipment before taking the stage.

Band members expressed gratitude for the support they received from the community. Many had been fundraising for months to afford the trip to Disney World, making the potential cancellation particularly devastating.

Investigation Continues

Local police are investigating the theft from the school facility. Officials have not released details about the number of instruments stolen or their estimated value, citing the ongoing investigation.

The stolen instruments included brass, woodwind, and percussion equipment that belonged to the school’s music program. Some instruments were personally owned by students, according to school officials.

School security measures are being reviewed following the incident. District officials said they are working with law enforcement to prevent similar thefts in the future.

Performance Success

The band successfully completed their Disney World performance despite the challenging circumstances. Students and directors said the experience was memorable, though different from what they had originally planned.

“These students showed incredible resilience,” the school spokesperson said. “They turned a difficult situation into an opportunity to come together as a community.”

The Westerville North marching band has been a fixture in the district’s music program for decades. The group regularly participates in competitions and community events throughout Ohio.

School officials said they are exploring options to replace the stolen instruments permanently. The district’s insurance may cover some of the losses, though the investigation must be completed first.
