COLUMBUS, OHIO — Twenty years after medical student Brian Shaffer disappeared from a popular bar district, investigators continue working to solve one of central Ohio’s most puzzling missing person cases.

Shaffer, a 27-year-old second-year medical student at Ohio State University, vanished on March 31, 2006, after visiting the Ugly Tuna Saloona bar in the Gateway Film Center complex near campus. Security cameras captured him entering the establishment with friends that evening, but no footage shows him leaving.

Last Known Movements

On the night of his disappearance, Shaffer had been celebrating the start of spring break with friends. He was seen on surveillance video entering the bar around 1:15 a.m. on April 1, 2006.

The bar was located on the second floor of the Gateway complex, with limited exit points. Despite extensive review of security footage from multiple cameras in the area, investigators found no evidence of Shaffer leaving the building.

Investigation Challenges

Columbus police detectives have pursued hundreds of leads over the past two decades. The case has been complicated by the limited number of exits from the second-floor location and the lack of surveillance footage showing Shaffer’s departure.

Investigators have conducted searches in various locations throughout central Ohio and followed tips from across the country. Despite these efforts, no physical evidence has been recovered that explains what happened to Shaffer.

The case gained national attention due to its unusual circumstances and the complete lack of evidence regarding how Shaffer left the bar area. True crime podcasts and television programs have featured the disappearance, generating additional tips for law enforcement.

Ongoing Investigation

The Columbus Division of Police continues to actively investigate Shaffer’s disappearance. Detectives regularly review the case file and follow up on new information from the public.

Anyone with information about Brian Shaffer’s disappearance is encouraged to contact Columbus police. The case remains open, and investigators say they pursue every credible lead they receive.

Shaffer was described as 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 165 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a white button-down shirt, dark pants, and brown leather shoes.

The medical student was known for his academic dedication and close relationships with family and friends. His disappearance occurred just months before he was scheduled to begin a clinical rotation at a local hospital.
