ATLANTA — A series of early-morning crashes on Interstate 285 created significant traffic delays for Atlanta commuters during Thursday’s rush hour, according to Georgia Department of Transportation officials.

The crashes occurred at multiple locations along the heavily traveled perimeter highway, backing up traffic for miles in both directions. Georgia State Patrol responded to at least three separate incidents between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.

The most serious crash happened on I-285 westbound near the Interstate 75 interchange, where a multi-vehicle collision blocked two lanes for more than an hour. Emergency crews worked to clear debris and assist motorists involved in the accident.

Traffic Backups Extend for Miles

The incidents caused ripple effects throughout Atlanta’s highway system as drivers sought alternate routes. Traffic on I-285 eastbound near Interstate 85 also experienced significant delays due to a separate fender-bender that occurred around 7:15 a.m.

Georgia DOT traffic cameras showed bumper-to-bumper conditions extending several miles in each direction from the crash sites. Some commuters reported travel times more than double their normal duration.

“We had crews dispatched to multiple locations this morning to help clear the roadway and get traffic moving again,” said a Georgia DOT spokesperson.

Emergency Response and Cleanup

Atlanta Fire Rescue responded to the westbound crash to assist with what officials described as minor injuries. At least two people were transported to nearby hospitals as a precaution, according to emergency services.

Tow trucks arrived on scene to remove damaged vehicles, while Georgia DOT maintenance crews cleaned up debris scattered across the roadway. The last lane restrictions were lifted shortly before 9 a.m., allowing traffic to return to normal patterns.

Georgia State Patrol investigators remained on scene to document the crashes and determine their causes. Officials have not released information about potential citations or charges related to the incidents.

Ongoing Construction Compounds Issues

The morning crashes occurred during ongoing construction projects along several sections of I-285, which have already reduced lane capacity in multiple areas. Construction-related lane closures near the Interstate 20 interchange added to commuter frustrations.

Transportation officials remind drivers to allow extra time for travel during peak hours and to use alternate routes when possible. Real-time traffic information is available through the Georgia 511 system and mobile traffic applications.

The crashes highlight ongoing safety concerns on I-285, which handles more than 250,000 vehicles daily and ranks among the busiest highway segments in the Southeast.
