CARY, NORTH CAROLINA — A multi-vehicle collision closed all westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Cary Towne Boulevard during Tuesday evening’s rush hour, creating significant traffic delays for commuters traveling through the area.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-40 between Exit 293 for Cary Towne Boulevard and Exit 290 for Harrison Avenue, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol officials. Emergency responders arrived on scene within minutes of the initial report.

Traffic Impacts and Detours

All westbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Cary Towne Boulevard exit while crews worked to clear the wreckage. The closure extended for approximately two miles, backing up traffic for several miles during the peak evening commute period.

Motorists experienced delays of up to 45 minutes as vehicles were forced to use alternative routes through local Cary streets. Highway patrol officers directed traffic at several intersections to help manage the increased volume on surface roads.

Emergency Response

Cary Fire Department, Wake County EMS, and multiple Highway Patrol units responded to the scene. At least two vehicles sustained significant damage and required towing from the roadway.

Officials have not yet released information about the number of people involved or the extent of any injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by state troopers.

Lane Reopening

Highway Patrol began reopening lanes around 7:15 p.m. after tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles and crews cleared debris from the roadway. Normal traffic flow resumed by approximately 7:45 p.m.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation advised drivers to continue using caution in the area as residual delays cleared. Officials reminded motorists to move over and slow down when approaching emergency vehicles on the roadway.

This crash marks the second major traffic incident on I-40 in the Cary area within the past month, highlighting ongoing safety concerns along this heavily traveled corridor connecting Raleigh and Durham to western North Carolina.
