Last Surviving Angus Barn Co-Founder Dies at Age 94

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — The last surviving co-founder of the iconic Angus Barn restaurant has died at age 94, the establishment announced this week.
Van Eure, who helped establish the landmark steakhouse in 1960 alongside business partner Thad Eure Jr., passed away peacefully surrounded by family members. The restaurant has served as a Raleigh dining institution for more than six decades.
“Van was instrumental in creating the vision and atmosphere that made Angus Barn a beloved destination,” restaurant officials said in a statement. “His passion for hospitality and commitment to excellence helped shape what we are today.”
Building a Raleigh Institution
Eure and his partner transformed a former dairy barn on Glenwood Avenue into what would become one of North Carolina’s most recognizable restaurants. The rustic red building with its distinctive architecture has welcomed millions of diners since opening its doors.
The co-founder remained actively involved in restaurant operations well into his later years. Staff members recalled his frequent visits to check on service quality and interact with longtime customers who had become friends over the decades.
Eure’s business philosophy centered on creating memorable dining experiences through attention to detail and genuine Southern hospitality. These principles became cornerstones of the restaurant’s enduring success.
Legacy in the Community
Beyond the restaurant industry, Eure contributed to various charitable causes throughout the Raleigh area. He supported local youth programs and participated in community fundraising events for decades.
The Angus Barn has employed thousands of Triangle area residents since its founding. Many former staff members have gone on to successful careers in hospitality and restaurant management, carrying forward lessons learned under Eure’s guidance.
Restaurant management indicated that current operations will continue unchanged. The establishment remains under family ownership and maintains its commitment to the founding principles established by Eure and his partner.
Continuing Tradition
Current Angus Barn leadership expressed gratitude for Eure’s lasting contributions to the restaurant and broader community. Plans for memorial services will be announced by the family at a later date.
The restaurant will observe a moment of silence during dinner service this week to honor its co-founder’s memory. A special tribute display featuring photographs from the establishment’s early years will be installed in the main dining room.
Eure is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family has requested privacy during this time while they make arrangements to celebrate his life and legacy.
The Angus Barn continues to serve dinner seven days a week at its original Glenwood Avenue location, maintaining the traditions and standards that Eure helped establish more than 60 years ago.
