TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA β€” Florida has opened the first round of grant applications for $209 million in federal Rural Health Transformation funding, offering relief to rural hospital administrators who have been waiting months for access to the infrastructure money.

The DeSantis administration announced this week that grant applications are now available for rural health infrastructure improvements funded through the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” passed by Congress. The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) posted the applications as the first phase of distributing funds awarded to Florida late last year.

Infrastructure Focus for Initial Grants

Tuesday’s announcement covers the first round of grant opportunities, focusing on infrastructure necessary to monitor success and track expenditures and deliverables. The initial funding can be used for grant management technologies, independent evaluation services to monitor compliance, data governance, and the efficacy of the initiative.

Approved uses include technical assistance services for grant sub-awardees and education and outreach services to assist Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries in selecting an integrated health plan.

Rural Hospital Leaders Express Relief

Lauren Faison-Clark, CEO of Doctors’ Memorial Hospital in rural Perry, has been anxiously waiting for the state to start accepting grant applications for the Rural Health Transformation money. The announcement ends months of anticipation for rural healthcare providers across the state.

AHCA said it will “soon” post a second round of grants for initiatives intended to improve access to health care for rural Florida. The agency must announce both rounds of grant awards by September 3.

Legislative Approval Expected

The grant application announcement came just days before the Joint Legislative Budget Commission is expected to grant AHCA authority to spend the federal money awarded late last year. The timing suggests coordination between state agencies and legislative leadership to expedite the funding process.

Rural healthcare facilities across Florida have struggled with infrastructure challenges and limited resources. The $209 million in federal funding represents a significant investment in strengthening healthcare delivery systems in underserved areas of the state.

Healthcare administrators in rural communities have emphasized the need for these funds to modernize facilities, upgrade technology systems, and expand services for residents who often face long travel distances to access specialized care.
