Flooding Closes I-77 Section and I-480 Exit Ramp in Columbus Area

COLUMBUS — Heavy rainfall forced the closure of a section of Interstate 77 and an exit ramp on Interstate 480 due to flooding conditions, according to Ohio Department of Transportation officials.
Transportation crews shut down the affected roadways after standing water made travel unsafe for motorists. The flooding impacted traffic flow during the morning commute, forcing drivers to seek alternate routes.
ODOT crews are monitoring water levels and working to clear drainage systems in the affected areas. Officials have not provided an estimated time for reopening the closed sections.
Traffic Diversions in Place
Motorists traveling through the Columbus metro area are advised to use alternate routes while cleanup efforts continue. Electronic message boards are directing traffic away from the flooded sections.
The closures come as the region experiences ongoing rainfall that has stressed local drainage systems. Several low-lying areas have reported standing water on roadways.
Safety Warnings for Drivers
Transportation officials remind drivers to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow standing water can cause vehicles to lose control or become stranded.
“Turn around, don’t drown” remains the official guidance for motorists encountering flooded roads, according to emergency management officials. Water depth can be difficult to judge, and road surfaces may be damaged beneath flood water.
Weather forecasters are monitoring conditions as additional rainfall could extend the closure times. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling and allow extra time for commutes.
