ATLANTA, GEORGIA β€” The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Thursday morning warning of high fire danger conditions across north Georgia as relative humidity levels are expected to plummet to 25 percent or less for four or more hours.

The weather statement, issued at 3:21 a.m. EDT by NWS Peachtree City, forecasts dangerous fire conditions beginning this afternoon and continuing into the evening hours. Light winds from the east to southeast at 3 to 6 mph will accompany the low humidity levels.

Dry Conditions Create Fire Risk

Weather officials warned that the combination of low humidity and dry fuels will create high fire danger conditions throughout the affected areas. The extended period of low moisture in the air significantly increases the risk of fires spreading rapidly once ignited.

Residents planning any outdoor burning activities are advised to check with their local burn permitting authorities before proceeding. Many jurisdictions may restrict or prohibit outdoor burning during periods of elevated fire danger.

Safety Precautions Urged

For those who receive permission to burn outdoors, the National Weather Service emphasized the need for extreme caution. The dry atmospheric conditions mean that any spark or ember could quickly ignite surrounding vegetation or debris.

The weather service recommends having adequate water supplies and firefighting equipment readily available before beginning any controlled burns. Property owners should also ensure proper clearance around burn areas and have a plan to extinguish fires completely.

The fire danger warning comes as Georgia enters the spring season, when dry conditions often coincide with increased outdoor activities and yard maintenance that may involve burning brush or debris.
