Federal agents raid 16 Arbor Place Mall stores selling counterfeit goods

ATLANTA — Federal agents raided 16 stores at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville, seizing thousands of counterfeit items in a major crackdown on fake merchandise sales, authorities announced.
The coordinated operation, led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit, targeted retailers allegedly selling knockoff designer goods including handbags, jewelry, electronics, and clothing. Agents executed search warrants simultaneously across multiple storefronts at the Douglas County shopping center.
“This operation demonstrates our commitment to protecting consumers and legitimate businesses from the harmful effects of counterfeit merchandise,” said HSI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Katrina Berger in a statement.
Massive Seizure Operation
Investigators confiscated an estimated $2 million worth of fake goods during the raid, according to federal officials. The counterfeit items included replica luxury handbags, watches, shoes, and electronic accessories that violated trademark protections of major brands.
HSI agents worked alongside Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and mall security to execute the warrants. The operation began early in the morning and continued throughout the day as agents catalogued and removed merchandise from the targeted stores.
Several store operators were detained for questioning, though federal officials have not announced formal charges at this time. The investigation remains ongoing, according to HSI officials.
Consumer Protection Concerns
Federal authorities emphasized the public safety risks associated with counterfeit goods, which often lack proper safety testing and quality controls. Fake electronics can pose fire hazards, while counterfeit medications and cosmetics may contain dangerous chemicals.
“Counterfeit goods aren’t just trademark violations — they can pose serious health and safety risks to consumers,” Berger said. The operation also aims to protect legitimate retailers who compete unfairly against sellers of cheap knockoff products.
Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds praised the collaborative effort. “We’re committed to working with our federal partners to ensure businesses in our community operate legally and safely,” Pounds stated.
Ongoing Investigation
The Arbor Place Mall raid represents part of a broader federal initiative targeting intellectual property crimes across the Southeast. HSI has conducted similar operations at shopping centers and flea markets throughout Georgia in recent months.
Mall management released a statement saying they are cooperating fully with the investigation. “Arbor Place is committed to providing a safe and legal shopping environment for our customers and tenants,” the statement read.
Federal prosecutors will review evidence seized during the raid to determine what charges may be filed. Trafficking in counterfeit goods can result in significant federal penalties including fines and prison time.
The investigation continues as agents analyze the seized merchandise and trace supply chains. Additional raids may occur as investigators follow leads developed during the Arbor Place operation.
