DeSantis Postpones Special Session, Adds AI and Vaccine Mandate Items
Governor delays redistricting session by one week, adding AI Bill of Rights and vaccine mandate legislation to the four-day special session agenda.
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — Governor Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday he is delaying a special legislative session focused on congressional redistricting by one week while expanding the agenda to include artificial intelligence regulation and vaccine mandate legislation.
The special session will now take place between April 28 and May 1, replacing the original session scheduled to begin this coming Monday. The expanded call includes two priority bills that failed to pass during the regular legislative session.
Redistricting Remains Primary Focus
“[I am] calling the Legislature of the State of Florida for a Special Session relating to consideration of legislation for the drawing of congressional districts for the State of Florida and any legal challenges thereto, including the appropriation of additional funding for such litigation,” DeSantis wrote in his Wednesday evening proclamation.
The redistricting component addresses the long-anticipated redrawing of the state’s congressional maps, which has been a contentious issue in Florida politics.
AI Bill of Rights and Vaccine Mandates Added
The governor expanded the special session call to include legislation “relating to (1) protecting Floridians from the dangers of artificial intelligence including an AI Bill of Rights for Floridians,” according to the proclamation.
The artificial intelligence legislation represents one of DeSantis’ priority measures that did not advance during the regular session. The proposed AI Bill of Rights would establish protections for Florida residents regarding the use of artificial intelligence technology.
Vaccine mandate legislation also appears on the expanded agenda, marking another key issue that failed to gain traction during the regular legislative session.
Strategic Timing Shift
The one-week delay provides additional time for lawmakers to prepare for the condensed four-day session. Special sessions typically focus on specific legislative priorities identified by the governor and operate under more restrictive timelines than regular sessions.
The timing change comes as legislative leaders work to coordinate the complex redistricting process, which requires careful consideration of legal requirements and potential court challenges. The governor’s proclamation specifically mentions appropriating additional funding for litigation related to the congressional district maps.
Florida’s congressional delegation currently consists of representatives whose districts were drawn following the 2020 census. The redistricting special session will address any necessary adjustments to these boundaries.
The expanded agenda signals DeSantis’ determination to advance his artificial intelligence and vaccine mandate priorities, which failed to gain sufficient support during the regular legislative session that concluded earlier this year.
