Columbus City Schools Adopts Comprehensive AI Policy for Students, Staff
School board unanimously passes policy regulating student and staff use of AI tools, requiring teacher approval for academic assignments.

COLUMBUS, OHIO β Columbus City Schools board members unanimously approved a comprehensive artificial intelligence policy Tuesday night, establishing guidelines for how students and staff can use AI tools in educational settings across the district.
The new policy addresses concerns about academic integrity while recognizing the potential benefits of AI technology in modern education. Board members said the policy aims to balance innovation with responsible use of emerging technologies.
“We need to prepare our students for a world where artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent,” said Superintendent Talisa Dixon during the board meeting. “This policy provides a framework that allows us to harness the benefits of AI while maintaining our commitment to authentic learning.”
Policy Guidelines and Restrictions
Under the approved policy, students must receive explicit permission from teachers before using AI tools for academic assignments. The policy prohibits using AI to complete homework, essays, or assessments without prior approval and proper disclosure.
Teachers and staff members are required to notify administrators when incorporating AI tools into their curriculum. The policy mandates that any AI-generated content used in educational materials must be clearly labeled and attributed.
The district will also implement training programs to help educators understand AI capabilities and limitations. These professional development sessions will focus on identifying AI-generated work and teaching students about ethical AI use.
Academic Integrity Measures
Columbus City Schools officials emphasized that the policy strengthens existing academic integrity standards rather than replacing them. Students who violate the AI usage guidelines will face consequences under the district’s current academic dishonesty policies.
The policy requires teachers to develop AI-specific rubrics for assignments where artificial intelligence tools are permitted. These rubrics will help evaluate student work that incorporates AI assistance while ensuring learning objectives are met.
District technology coordinators will monitor AI usage patterns and provide regular reports to administrators. The policy also establishes a review committee that will assess the effectiveness of AI guidelines and recommend updates as technology evolves.
Implementation Timeline
The new artificial intelligence policy takes effect immediately for the current academic year. District officials plan to roll out comprehensive training sessions for all teaching staff by the end of the semester.
Parents and guardians will receive detailed information about the AI policy through district communications and school websites. The policy document will be added to student handbooks and made available in multiple languages to ensure widespread understanding.
Columbus City Schools joins several other Ohio districts that have adopted similar AI policies this academic year. State education officials have encouraged local districts to develop their own guidelines as artificial intelligence tools become more accessible to students and educators.
The district plans to review and potentially revise the policy annually based on technological developments and implementation feedback from schools across the system.
