Charlotte light rail stabbing suspect ruled unfit for state trial
DeCarlos Brown Jr., charged in the 2025 fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s light rail, has been ruled mentally unfit to stand trial on state murder charges.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA β A man accused of fatally stabbing a passenger on Charlotte‘s light rail system has been deemed mentally incapable of standing trial on state murder charges, according to court documents filed this week.
DeCarlos Brown Jr. faces charges in connection with the 2025 stabbing death of Iryna Zarutska aboard a Charlotte Area Transit System train. His attorney has requested a six-month delay in state proceedings while Brown remains in federal custody on related charges.
Court filings indicate that mental health evaluations have determined Brown is “incapable to proceed” with the state murder case at this time. The ruling means he cannot assist in his defense or understand the nature of the charges against him under current circumstances.
Federal and State Cases Running Parallel
Brown currently faces both federal and state charges stemming from the deadly incident. While the state case has been delayed due to his mental competency status, he remains in federal custody as those proceedings continue.
The stabbing occurred on Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line, which connects downtown Charlotte to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus. The incident shocked the transit community and raised safety concerns among regular riders.
Legal Process Moving Forward
Defense attorneys are seeking the six-month continuance to allow time for Brown’s mental health treatment and potential restoration of competency. During this period, medical professionals will work to determine if he can be restored to a state where he can participate in his defense.
The competency determination is separate from any potential insanity defense and focuses solely on Brown’s current ability to understand legal proceedings and assist his attorneys. If he is eventually deemed competent, the state murder case can proceed to trial.
Zarutska’s death highlighted ongoing safety challenges facing public transit systems across the region. The Charlotte Area Transit System implemented additional security measures following the incident, including increased police presence on trains and platforms.
The case remains under active prosecution in both state and federal courts. No new trial date has been set for the state charges pending the outcome of competency proceedings and Brown’s potential mental health treatment.
