COLUMBUS — Twenty years after Ohio State University medical student Brian Shaffer vanished from a downtown Columbus bar, investigators continue searching for answers in one of central Ohio’s most perplexing missing person cases.

Shaffer, 27, disappeared on March 31, 2006, after entering the Ugly Tuna Saloona bar near the OSU campus with friends to celebrate spring break. Security cameras captured him entering the establishment, but no footage shows him leaving, according to Columbus police.

The case has baffled investigators for two decades despite extensive searches, multiple investigations, and numerous tips from the public. Shaffer was just months away from graduating medical school when he vanished without a trace.

Last Known Movements

On the night of his disappearance, Shaffer met friends at several bars in the campus area before arriving at the Ugly Tuna Saloona around 1:15 a.m. Security footage shows him talking with friends and other patrons inside the bar.

Friends last saw Shaffer around 2 a.m. when the bar was preparing to close. When they looked for him to leave together, he was nowhere to be found, police reported.

Investigators reviewed hours of security camera footage from the building and surrounding area but found no evidence of Shaffer exiting the establishment. The bar was located on the second floor of a building with limited exit points, making his disappearance even more mysterious.

Investigation Efforts

Columbus police have pursued hundreds of leads over the years, including searches of nearby buildings, waterways, and construction sites. The case has been featured on national television programs and generated thousands of tips from across the country.

Detectives have interviewed numerous witnesses and potential suspects but have not been able to develop sufficient evidence to make arrests. The investigation remains active, with police continuing to follow up on new information as it becomes available.

Shaffer’s family has maintained hope throughout the years, organizing searches and keeping his case in the public eye. His mother died in 2008 without knowing what happened to her son.

Ongoing Mystery

The case has spawned numerous theories among investigators and amateur sleuths, ranging from accidental death to foul play. Some have suggested Shaffer may have left voluntarily to start a new life, though friends and family say this would be completely out of character.

Columbus police Detective Andrea Velasquez, who currently oversees the case, said investigators remain committed to finding answers. “We continue to receive tips and follow up on any credible information,” Velasquez said.

Anyone with information about Brian Shaffer’s disappearance is encouraged to contact Columbus police. The case serves as a reminder of how quickly someone can vanish, leaving behind questions that persist for decades.

Shaffer would be 47 years old today. His case remains one of Ohio’s most enduring unsolved mysteries, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces when investigating disappearances with few concrete leads.
