NASHVILLE — Metropolitan Nashville police bomb squad technicians safely destroyed an explosive device discovered near a popular walking trail Tuesday afternoon, authorities reported.

Officers responded to the area around 2:30 p.m. after a resident walking the trail spotted what appeared to be a suspicious package and contacted emergency services. The Nashville Fire Department also assisted in the response.

Police immediately cordoned off a several-block radius around the discovery site as a precaution while the bomb squad investigated the device. Nearby residents were asked to shelter in place during the operation.

Controlled Detonation Conducted

After determining the object posed a legitimate threat, bomb squad specialists conducted a controlled detonation to neutralize the device. The explosion occurred around 4:15 p.m. without incident or injury to personnel or civilians.

“The device was successfully rendered safe through controlled demolition,” said Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron. “Our bomb technicians followed standard protocols to ensure public safety throughout the operation.”

No evacuations were necessary beyond the initial shelter-in-place advisory, which was lifted shortly after the controlled detonation was completed.

Investigation Continues

Detectives are now working to determine the origin and nature of the explosive device. Officials have not released details about the device’s construction or potential intent.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been notified of the incident and may assist with the ongoing investigation, according to police sources.

Aaron emphasized that authorities take all reports of suspicious packages seriously. “We encourage residents to remain vigilant and report anything that appears unusual or out of place,” he said.

Trail Reopens to Public

The walking trail and surrounding area have been cleared and reopened to the public. Police continue to patrol the vicinity as the investigation proceeds.

This marks the second suspicious device incident in Nashville this year. In March, police investigated a similar report that turned out to be a false alarm.

Anyone with information about Tuesday’s incident is asked to contact Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Tips can also be submitted anonymously online.
